Feb #NaBloPoMo: Tell us about your Siblings

Meg’s Sister

by Meg on February 6, 2012

My sister and I didn’t always get along. In fact, I don’t think we shared a real conversation until I was a teenager. We are 4 years apart, and I think if you are more than 2 years apart then you have absolutely nothing in common until your teenage years. Well, that was our case anyway.

But, after all the fights and stealing of one another’s clothes – I consider my sister my best friend. My sister is a smart, creative lady – and a great mom. In fact, she is the one I usually go to for mom advice. She’s a planner, loves to shop, and is a great deal finder.

When you hit adulthood, making friends can be hard. A lot of my friends either moved away, lost touch or are also my husbands friends. But, as we grew older, my sister and I have become really close – in fact I just consider her my best friend that I happen to be related to. We noticed this about 10 years ago, when she would call me everyday – and I began to not mind it at all. :P When I moved to Portland, she was the one I called everyday to check in on Michigan happenings. She had just had my niece, Abby, and it was hard to leave them – I really didn’t want to miss anything. During those conversations, we began to lean on each other for support more and more – and our adult friendship was born.

My sister is very crafty, and can make anything. Occasionally, she gets the craft bug and makes hair clips, sews really cool skirts and dresses for her daughter (now 6!) and makes other crafty things. She’s very creative, even though she doesn’t think so, and always has some great DIY ideas. Like stuffing dryer sheets in her furniture and curtains to make her house smell yummy, or building a guinny pig condo, complete with stairs and jicuzzi room, out of craft storage and fleece…she’s not afraid to try household tips and tricks, and usually has a ton of her own. (I know, I try to get her to blog them – but she is intimidated about these things).

You know that person in the family that plans all the family get-togethers? She’s that one. She even knows exactly when to suggest a family vacation (we are already booked for the summertime) and whenever someone’s birthday is coming up, she is the first to suggest a theme and coordinate everyone’s schedules to make a party happen. Even in the craziness of motherhood, she’s got it together.

When I had EL, (and even now) I would go to her for advice and help. My sister had always been the maternal one kids – especially my kids who are picky about whom they like – LOVE HER. My sister is the only one I trust my kids with, and they know that their aunt is always there for them – and always has fun activities to do and snacks to eat. If my babies get sick, she always knows what to suggest to help them feel better. She’s really good an recommending baby/kid products, and if I ever have a question about anything, I go to her about it first. She even got me into coupons, and always knows where the best sales are.

If there is a clearance section, my sister will shop the hell out it – and she gets some really good stuff for not a lot of money. To this day, I have no idea how she does it…for Christmas, she got EM her first couture – and when she told me how much she got it for, I was amazed. Let’s just say, she knows how to wait for a good sale, and can make it seem like a steal!

Everyday, my sister is there for me. She is one of those people in my life that I can count on, and even though we had a rough start to our relationship – I am grateful for the one we have now!
