How to entertain a baby

by Meg on February 21, 2012

When I had EL, I had no idea what do to engage him when he was a baby… I would ask myself: Is my baby bored? What should I be doing right now to entertain him? How do you entertain a 3 month old baby? This time around, with EM, I don’t seem to have any problems. Now that she is 3 months old, and really starting to recognize things and growing her curiosity, it’s easy to keep her entertained and to think of fun ways to distract her.

How to entertain a baby

#1. Hanging Toys

EL never liked those hang toys that you put on strollers and hang over bouncy seats. We accumulated so many when he was a baby, receiving them as gifts or just buying one to try – they ended up in a box, in perfect un-played with condition. When EM turned 1 month old, we decided to take out that box and try them with her. I am so glad we did, because they have been a lifesaver! She loves the ones that rattle, the ones with big eyes, and especially ones with polka dots!

#2. Activity Bars

My mom and dad have always been the ones in the family that could  find the perfect gifts – and EM’s first Christmas gift from them was no exception. They got her the Tiny Love Take-Along Arch, and it quickly became her favorite! I love this toy because I can clamp it to anything – the clamps are adjustable and have a great grip. I clamp it to her crib and put her under it when I need to tend to EL (like give him a bath) and it keeps her attention for 15-20 minutes. I also clip it on her bouncy seat, and bring it with me whenever we go anywhere – it clamps perfectly on her car seat as well. Here is a video of her playing with it:

#3. Mirrors

We have a mirror at the end of our hallway that EM loves to hang out in front of (with me holding her of course). She reaches out and grabs for the baby on the other side, smiles and giggles and just has a grand old time! She also has a mirror that we put on the floor with her for tummy time, and its fun to see her recognize and play with the baby smiling at her!

#4. Tummy-Time

Tummy time is kind of a work out for EM, so she doesn’t want to do it for long — but we make sure to have fun while she is doing her baby push ups! I roll a ball back in forth in front of her, encourage her to roll over (she can do tummy to back now!) and place her mirror in front of her to hang out with another baby ;)

#5. Reading, talking and generally fawning over her cuteness

Who doesn’t love a little attention? EM loves it when we sing to her in high voices, play patty cake with her feet and read random things to her while smiling! She can recognize her name now, and sometimes I sneak in a little first word practice: “Say Mama! Ma-ma!” hehe. I think my husband tries the same with “Da-Da” from time to time too!

Entertaining a baby can seem daunting at first, but I hope I have given you some fun ideas – just have fun! You would be surprised at what can make a little one smile!
