Being a web designer/developer in the blogging world, I am often told:
“Wow, I would love to have a custom WordPress theme, but I don’t know how to move my blog from Blogger to WordPress.”
or
“If I had the time to sit down and figure out how to move everything, I would move my blog from blogger to my own domain and use WordPress.”
Look no further, I am here to tell you how to do it yourself, with out paying me or another service to move all of your posts, comments, and pictures from Blogger to WordPress easily and smoothly (without incident!). I started this blog on Blogger too, so I know the process personally as well!
Before we get started, this tutorial assumes that:
A. You’ve already bought your domain name.
B. You have already set up your blog hosting.
If you haven’t done this yet, I suggest Bluehost.com for your hosting and domain needs. I have been with them for 5.5-6 years (even when I worked for another host, ha!) and recommend them thoroughly. Not only are they reasonably priced, their customer service is spectacular, prompt and easy to work with. Also they have everything you need on their servers to run WordPress smoothly. I have had 100% uptime with them, and thats hard to say about other hosts!
Okay, enough Bluehost love, back to the tutorial!
Exporting your Blogger blog
First, we have to extract all of your posts, pictures and comments from the blogspot database your blog is kept in. This is, IMHO, the hardest part of a Blogger to WordPress migration. But, easy enough that anyone can do it!
#1: Sign into your Blogger account, taking you to the Dashboard:
#2 Click on the drop down next to the paper/post icon. Click on ‘Settings’.
#3 In the Settings Menu on the left side, click ‘Other’
#4 Under Blog Tools at the top, click ‘Export Blog’. When prompted, click ‘Download Blog’
This will begin downloading an xml file which contains all of your blog posts, comments, and photo URL’s of photos hosted on blogspot. Don’t worry, you needn’t download all the photos individually.
Congratulations, you’ve finished the hardest part. In Part 2, we will discuss how to convert that XML file and get all of that content into WordPress! Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it!
